POPULAR CULTURE

My understanding of of Adoro and Hebdige and how they perceive popular music.

The idea of of popular culture originated from 'The Frankfurt school', they were group of Marxist philosophers from Germany during the mid 20th century. They were concerned with the role of popular culture in exploiting the masses and maintaing the power of bourgeoisie. they represent the first attempt to write about popular music.

Hebdige is a media theorist who contradicts Adorns theory on popular music. Adorno believed that the majority of people who listen to popular music,  consume it without thinking, whereas Hebdige believes that the mass audience are not manipulated. He is known for his views on society. His thoughts on popular music was that they were repetitive and were the same. He viewed fans of popular music were easily influenced and absorbed by it.he felt that the genre attracted lower class and looked down upon.  He believed that true art was classical music and that people who listened to classical music are educated, cultured and are from middle and upper class.
