Before the opening scene begins, a black screen with three words in the middle of it saying, 'SHE', 'LOST', 'HIM.' really confuses the audience as its not clear who it is referring to, the diegetic sound of an ocean and and strong winds sets the scene for the audience as the sounds correlates to the visuals. the bright colours in the mise-en-scene suggest that the song is going to be uplifting to viewers however the close up shots and the tone of the lyrics contradicts that as she looks serious.

The opening scene is a long shot of the artist facing the ocean as the beat slowly drops, she is wearing a bright blue dress, the colour is very important as it symbolises trust, loyalty and confidence and relate to Taylor swifts choices of songs relating to love and relationship breakdown. the artist represents girl power and is respected and followed by predominantly young white female between the ages 7-25.As branches begin to spiral from the sea and sand, which immediately introduces an element of intertextuality between the music video and a Disney movie.
